On Friday night, I was invited to a dinner in Aberdeen that celebrated the tenth anniversary of Aberdeen University Students’ Association. Back in 2000-01, after my degree, I spent a year as the students’ association’s elected, full-time President, and was in fact its very first president, following the SA’s creation from a merger of three previous student organisations.
It was a challenging but hugely rewarding year, during which I learned a great deal. Students’ associations are great ways to gain new skills, meet new people, and make a real difference to students’ lives, and it was a privilege to have served in that office. I was invited to the dinner to deliver a speech as the inaugural president, which made me feel very, very old indeed.
Nicole and I made a weekend of it, and the other main highlight of the trip was dinner on Saturday night in the quite excellent Nazma Tandoori on Bridge Street. It really is Aberdeen’s best curryhouse, and if you find yourself in the Granite City, then I can heartily recommend Nazma. Just don’t let yourself be put off by the couple of lap dancing clubs you have to walk past in order to get there.
Oh, and I almost forgot. There was an election. I’ll write more with my views on that, plus some thoughts on why we need the Single Transferable Vote.
I bet you can’t wait.
oioi Simon, long time lurker first time comment :p
Nazma is nice enough but if you are back in Aberdeen and feel the need for curry try out Gourmet Kama and Lahore Karahi. Kama is on Bridge St and once you get past the rather odd decorations and lack of atmosphere the food is second to none. Lahore Karahi is on King St 5 mins down from Castlegate and is also good.
Congratulations on your graduation from lurking to commenting, Joe. Thanks for the recommendations – I’d heard Kama is good, I can picture it further up on Bridge Street. Lahore Karahi sounds like it’s where Kury used to be – will try that out sometime. I’m just glad Inverness is very well off for curry too.
